Last Friday evening, Wendy and I went to dinner to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary.  We were in the middle of enjoying a fine dining experience when I recognized a guy I played football with in high school.  He was having an early Christmas dinner with his family.

This guy now plays acoustic guitar for a pretty popular band.  In fact, if I mentioned the band’s name, almost every one reading this would be familiar with their music.

We introduced each other to our wives and briefly caught up with what’s been going on since high school.  In light of his success as a musician, this guy is as down-to-earth and humble as ever.

As I reflected on that encounter, I thought about the fact that when we know someone who has achieved a high level of success publicly, it’s tempting to drop their name on Twitter, or Facebook, or in general conversations with others.

But why does that happen?  Why do we feel the need to name drop?  It’s because it makes us feel important to know someone who is perceived by others as important.

Here’s something to think about.  What if we took advantage of opportunities to drop the name of Jesus in our interactions with others?  Better yet, what if we began to strategically and intentionally manipulate our conversations to include the name of Jesus every chance we get?

The ultimate name drop is found in Philippians 2:9-11.  Since the God who spoke the universe into existence places the highest value on the name of his Son, Jesus, shouldn’t we do the same?

Whose name are you dropping?
