In Revelation 3, the church in Sardis had a reputation of being alive, but it was, in fact, spiritually dead. However, it could be brought back to life if it listened to a few warnings and followed a few simple commands.
If you find yourself in the same situation as the church in Sardis, there’s hope for you, but you have to engage in a little R&R.
Verse 3 says, “Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent…” Remember and repent—R&R.
First, they were to remember the foundational aspects of the Gospel that gave them life to begin with (the sinless life, the atoning sacrifice, and the glorious resurrection of Jesus). When they determined they wanted to live a life of gratitude in response to the Gospel, they were to turn around from the way in which they were currently headed and go the opposite direction.
Repentance always involves a change of direction. A person cannot be in a right relationship with God while living a lifestyle in opposition to what his Word teaches. Sooner or later, God’s judgment will catch up with them, and it will be when they least expect it.
If you have a reputation of being alive like the church in Sardis, but in reality, you are spiritually dead, Scripture is clear that there’s hope for you, but you have to remember and repent.
